A Midsummer Night’s Dream
By: Daniel R. Platt
In the story of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, many elements conjure up hysterical events that lead up to the residential ending. To the naked eye, the reader may find four or five stories packed into one, but in reality, this story is singular and can be summed up in one phrase, Puck.
This prankster, fairy demon is an assistant of the king of fairies, Oberon. Puck goes about trying to run errands for his king, but still finds ways to make life a small bit more comical. All his pranks are of good nature. The only thing that Puck does that could be considered offensive was forcing Love upon unwilling participants, but this was actually a job bestowed upon him by his king, not an actual prank. The humorous part of this is that he accidentally put the Love powder on the wrong lover. Which asks the question, is it morally wrong to make someone love another against their wishes? But I digress…
To me, the most humorous part of this story is reading Bottom’s attempts at dialogue and his misuse of large words. Such as when Bottom is going over his lines for the play. He says he can play the role of Thisbe and use a “monstrous little voice”, which, of course, contradicts itself. I rather hate to admit it, but Bottom sometimes reminds me of myself when using a variety of words in my every-day dialogues. When running through the practice of his play with other cast members, he shows how big his ego really is while feeling he should play all the parts. All these characteristics come together when Puck turns Bottom’s head into one of an ass’.
Still, the hilarity continues when the Queen of the fairies, Titania, actually falls in love with this ass-faced man at first site, with the help the Love powder, once again. Can someone say “Furry Lover” and/or “Bestiality”? …Or is that legal in the fairy world? I don’t know…
All this comes together when Bottom and his crew perform the play for the King and Queen of Athens. Too bad the Queen just doesn’t have that good of a sense of humor. The cast is almost sentenced to death because of this… or was it Bottom’s horrible acting skills? The cast, however, is saved by Oberon and, mainly, Puck with their speeches and poems to the audience. This saves the cast, and the day, and what a wonderful day it has been.

Don't worry, the mace only burns a little bit... and then you get a nice blush red look in your eyes that everyone can enjoy. ^_^
